Applications and Technology in Teacher Education
This presentation was recorded for the online, 2018 International Network of Teacher Education Institutions (INTEI) Conference. The presenter, a Summit member, offers an overview of applications, technologies, and strategies that may be useful for Summit work.
Participants in the Summit Series collaborate across organizations, countries and cultures when not meeting in-person. Members are using the following tools among others, to partner on curriculum design, co-teaching, media authoring and book chapter writing.
Document Collaboration and Storage
Dropbox
“One place for all your stuff, wherever you are” (Dropbox). This is a great tool for sharing files (folders of files, even) with your colleagues, from a single user account. You determine who has access to each file and folder that you upload into your personal account.
Google Docs
“Google Docs is an online word processor that lets you create and format text documents and collaborate with other people in real-time” (Google). This is a free, online application with no download required. It is integrated with other free, online Google apps.
Learning Management Systems
Moodle
“Moodle is a learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust, secure and integrated system to create personalised learning environments.”
Reference Management & Sharing
Mendeley
“Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network. Make your own fully searchable library in seconds, cite as you write, and read and annotate your PDFs on any device” (Mendeley). Free accounts are available. This is cross-platform with an app if you prefer to use a mobile device.
Zotero
“Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources” (Zotero). There is a free version of this cross-platform application. It has a Chrome browser extension.
Social Media
“Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online” (http://www.gcflearnfree.org/facebook101/what-is-facebook/1/). In Facebook people also create pages (public) and groups (public or private) for those with similar interests, causes, etc.
Scoop.it
With Scoop.it!, a content curation service, “create and grow your online presence in minutes by publishing curated content” (Scoop.it).
#Slack
“Slack is a messaging app for teams. It brings all your team’s communication and files in one place, where they’re instantly searchable and available wherever you go. Come explore some of our main features and see why thousands of customers love us” (Slack).

Videoconferencing
Beam+
“The Beam…allows users to interact with remote locations by coupling high-end video and audio with the freedom of motion to move about a space” (Suitable Technologies).

Google Hangouts
“You can use Hangouts to send messages, make voice and video calls, and share photos. Hangouts are synced automatically across devices, so you can start a Hangout on your computer and continue on another device, like your phone” (Google).
Skype
“Now Skype is part of Microsoft…Skype is for doing things together, whenever you’re apart. Skype’s text, voice and video make it simple to share experiences with the people who matter to you, wherever they are” (Microsoft).
Zoom
“Zoom unifies cloud video conferencing, simple online meetings, group messaging, and a software-defined conference room solution into one easy-to-use platform. Our solution offers…video, audio, and wireless screen-sharing experience across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Blackberry, Zoom Rooms, and H.323/SIP room systems” (Zoom).
Web
Weebly
Weebly is a free, online web editor. “Weebly’s powerful drag and drop website builder and guided set up get you to the finish line faster, no coding needed” (Weebly).
Wix
Wix is a free, online website builder. It “…unites beauty and advanced technology to create your stunning website” (Wix).
WordPress
WordPress.com – “The easiest way to create a website or blog. Choose a design, a custom domain, and a plan with the features you need — all with expert support.”
WordPress.org – “Full control from beginning to end. Set up your own WordPress site through a hosting provider and manage your plugins and software updates.”
